The Darkening
Years ago, Archbishop Lazarus convinced King Leoric to establish his kingdom in the small town of Tristram, built upon the ruins of an ancient monastery. Unknown to them, deep in the labyrinth below lies the prison of Diablo, the Lord of Terror.
As Diablo's soulstone weakens, his corruption seeps into the land. King Leoric falls to madness, his paranoia consuming him. His son, Prince Albrecht, is kidnapped by Archbishop Lazarus and used as a vessel for Diablo's resurrection.
The mad king is slain by his own knights and rises as the Skeleton King. A lone hero arrives to investigate the growing darkness, descending through 16 levels of hell itself to confront the Lord of Terror in his lair.
