The Complete Chronological History of Diablo
Primordial Era - Before Time
The First Being
In the absolute void before existence, Anu emerged—the One, the First Being. He was consciousness without form, light without shadow, perfection embodied. For eons immeasurable, Anu contemplated the nature of existence in solitude.
Yet within Anu stirred imperfection: doubt, fear, hatred, pride. These negative aspects troubled his perfect unity. In a moment of cosmic significance, Anu performed The Sundering—purging all darkness from himself.
"To achieve perfection, one must cast out all imperfection. From unity came duality. From peace came eternal war."
The Birth of Tathamet
The expelled darkness coalesced into Tathamet, a seven-headed dragon of pure malevolence. Each head embodied a fundamental evil: Terror, Hatred, Destruction, Sin, Lies, Anguish, and Pain.
Tathamet was Anu's perfect opposite—chaos to his order, darkness to his light, malice to his benevolence. The dragon roared across the void, seeking to corrupt and destroy all that Anu represented.

The Eternal Battle
Anu and Tathamet clashed in a battle that transcended time and space. For countless eons, they fought—Anu wielding the power of order and light, Tathamet commanding chaos and darkness.
The void itself trembled with their conflict. Reality bent and warped around their struggles. Yet neither could overcome the other, for they were perfectly matched—two halves of the same whole, engaged in an impossible stalemate.
The Deadlock: Pure order cannot defeat pure chaos. Pure light cannot extinguish absolute darkness. They were eternal opposites, destined to battle forever—or die together.
The Creation Event
In one climactic moment, both beings struck with all their power. The impact was cataclysmic. Both Anu and Tathamet were destroyed, their essences scattered across the void.
From their deaths, all of creation was born:
The Crystal Arch formed—a massive diamond structure pulsing with divine light. It began spawning angels, beings of pure light and purpose, each emerging with a specific aspect of order and justice.
The Worldstone crystallized—an artifact of unimaginable power capable of reshaping reality itself. It would become the ultimate prize in the coming conflict.
The Burning Hells erupted—seven circles of torment, each more terrible than the last. Rivers of magma, lakes of suffering, and endless screaming characterized this realm of pure malevolence.
The Seven Great Evils were born, each inheriting one of the dragon's fundamental corruptions. They would become the lords of Hell, commanding vast legions of demons.
Inarius the Renegade
Weary of war, angel Inarius plots to create a realm beyond the conflict.
Lilith Joins the Rebellion
Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, allies with Inarius to steal the Worldstone.
The Sin War (~3000 Years Before D1)
Inarius and Lilith steal the Worldstone and create Sanctuary—hidden from Heaven and Hell.
Birth of the Nephalem
Angels and demons produce offspring: Nephalem with god-like powers.

Inarius Weakens the Nephalem
Fearing their power, Inarius uses the Worldstone to suppress Nephalem abilities with each generation.
Lilith's Banishment
Enraged, Lilith slaughters the renegades. Inarius banishes her to the Void for millennia.
Horadrim Founded
Tyrael forms the Horadrim brotherhood to fight demons. Creates Soulstones to imprison Prime Evils.
Dark Exile (250-20 Years Before D1)
Lesser Evils overthrow Prime Evils, exile them to Sanctuary. Horadrim hunt and imprison them in Soulstones.
Prime Evils Imprisoned
Mephisto in Kurast, Baal in Aranoch (Tal Rasha's sacrifice), Diablo buried under Tristram.
Diablo (1996) - Year 1265
Diablo corrupts King Leoric, possesses Prince Albrecht. A hero descends 16 levels, defeats Diablo but makes fatal mistake: drives Soulstone into own forehead. Becomes Dark Wanderer.
Diablo II (2000) - Year 1265
Dark Wanderer frees Baal and Mephisto. Heroes pursue through Sanctuary: defeat Andariel, Duriel, Mephisto, Diablo. Act V: Baal corrupts Worldstone. Tyrael destroys it, weakening realm barriers forever.
Diablo III (2012) - Year 1285
20 years later. Fallen star reveals Tyrael (now mortal). Black Soulstone created, captures all Seven Evils. Diablo possesses Leah, becomes Prime Evil. Assaults High Heavens. Defeated by awakened Nephalem.
Reaper of Souls (2014)
Malthael (former Wisdom, now Death) steals Black Soulstone. Plans to exterminate all demonkind—including humans (demon-blooded). Westmarch falls. Nephalem defeats Malthael, Soulstone shatters.
Diablo IV (2023) - Year 1336
50 years later. Lilith returns from the Void. Inarius freed from Hell, leads Cathedral of Light. Epic confrontation: Lilith kills Inarius. Mephisto imprisoned in Worldstone shard. Neyrelle takes it, flees—begins corrupting.
Vessel of Hatred (2024)
Journey to Nahantu jungles. Track Neyrelle and Soulstone. Spiritborn class awakened. Mephisto's corruption spreads. Story continues...
